The invention provides a method for preparing olefins. The method comprises feeding at least one unsaturated hydrocarbon, alkane-containing feedstock and molecular oxygen-containing gas into an autothermal cracker, where the reactants react in the presence of a catalyst capable of supporting combustion beyond the flammability limit of conventional fuels to produce a hydrocarbon product stream containing olefins.
