The invention belongs to the technical field of synthetic carbon nanotube materials and composites thereof, and discloses a method for preparing carbon nanotubes and their montmorillonite composites using nickel oxide as a catalyst and polyolefin as a carbon source material. Polyolefin, a compatibilizer, organically modified montmorillonite and nickel oxide are melt-mixed in an internal mixer or twin-screw extruder at a certain ratio. The mixture is heated in a crucible with a gas flame and burned at 600–950°C to prepare carbon nanotubes and their montmorillonite composites. The carbon source used is polyolefin or recycled polyolefin, which is low-cost and widely available. The nickel oxide and modified montmorillonite are easy to obtain, and the mixing equipment is conventional polymer processing equipment, while the synthesis equipment consists of ceramic crucibles and ordinary flames. Owing to the above advantages, the method of the invention is cost-competitive compared with other methods and can also solve the problem of waste plastic recycling.
